When it comes to local Georgian food, we will start from the basics. Almost in every restaurant in Tbilisi you can order and try some of the classics from the Georgian cuisine like Khachapuri, Khinkali or Lubiani. But, and this is a big but, as not every pizza taste like the other, for a great authentic Georgian experience, you need to know who to go to. Luckily for you, we'll tell you where you should go. So here are the most famous Georgian dishes and the right places to try them when you are in Tbilisi.

RETRO

Visiting Georgia without trying Khachapuri is a crime, it is like visiting Italy without trying some local pizza. So while almost every restaurant offers Khachapuri, you should search for authentic experience, one that you would know you are in the right place, or in other words, RETRO. It is made from khatcha cheese on top and stuffed bread (Puri). The real classic comes with an egg and a lump of butter on top. Each province has its own version of Khachapuri but the most famous is the calorie laden acharuli khatchapuri which comes from Adjara province. Located about 8 minutes drive from the city center and open daily between 10:00-22:00.

SAKHACHAPURE #1

If you do not feel like going out and you don't want to leave the city center or if you want to try a more modern version both in the shape and taste of the Khachapuri, this is the place for you. Large, tasty and satisfying dishes in addition to a rich menu from which you can choose.

ZAKHAR ZAKHARICH

Located right in the city center, this is one of the last few places that still makes handmade khinkali. Here, khinkali is produced for many reputable restaurants in the city because of the way khinkali is made here. There are no shortcuts or any special machines, just old ladies keeping the tradition and making 1 khinkali at the time by hand only. khinkali lamb is our choice. Open from 10:00 to 22:00.

SHAVI LOMI

If you are looking for a true Georgian experience, SHAVI LOMI is your place. This is one of the first restaurants to offer traditional Georgian dishes with a twist. The restaurant is small and cozy with a traditional Georgian design. If you want to taste a little of all kinds of Georgian cuisine, we would recommend you trying the Gobi dish which contains different type of cheese, great breads, pickles, salads and more. This is hardcore, real and old Georgian food so come with open mind. Open from 12:00 to 00:00.
